Position Overview:

This is a unique opportunity to join our fun, diverse team in delivering top-notch legal services to our clients and in helping the courts improve the state of the law. As an appellate attorney, you will play a crucial role in representing our clients in appellate court proceedings. You will also have the opportunity to advise clients in district court and administrative proceedings in an appellate consulting role. You will work on a wide range of civil appellate cases while collaborating with experienced attorneys.

Who you are:

-     Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school

-     Licensed to practice law in New Mexico in good standing or, if not already licensed in New Mexico, plan to sit for the New Mexico Bar Exam within six months of commencing work

-     A curious and quick learner

-     Tech savvy

-     Thoughtful and effective communicator, both verbally and in writing

-     Comfortable operating on a small team where members hold each other accountable

-     Understand and resonate with our core values of compassion, excellence, growth, teamwork and client empowerment

-     Experienced in appellate practice, including drafting appellate briefs and arguing before appellate courts (or, for newer lawyers, demonstrated effective use of skills that translate well to appellate practice)

-     Skilled in legal research and analysis

-     Detail-oriented and able to manage multiple cases simultaneously

-     Committed to upholding ethical standards and professionalism

What you'll do:

-     Legal Research and Analysis: Conduct in-depth legal research to support appellate arguments

-     Record Review: Review and analyze district court records, including pleadings, transcripts and trial exhibits

-     Drafting Appellate Briefs: Prepare persuasive appellate briefs that effectively articulate legal arguments and positions on behalf of our clients

-     Oral Advocacy: Represent clients in appellate court proceedings, including oral arguments, and effectively communicate legal positions to appellate judges and justices

-     Case Evaluation: Assess the merits of potential appellate cases, provide legal opinions to clients, and make strategic recommendations

-     Client Communication: Maintain regular communication with clients to keep them informed about the progress of their cases and to address any concerns or questions

-     Collaboration: Collaborate with colleagues, including trial attorneys and their staff, to gather information and to formulate the best strategy for appeal

-     Stay Informed: Keep abreast of changes in appellate law, legal trends, and court decisions to provide the most up-to-date and effective legal representation

-     Practice Management: Manage busy caseload and administrative responsibilities effectively while balancing self-care and personal needs

Where you'll do it:

-     This position is primarily in-person although the firm is able to accommodate occasional remote work

-     The position may be remote for some or all of the remainder of 2024 while the firm explores relocating to a new office space by the beginning of 2025

-     For remote work, a reliable high-speed internet connection and a dedicated professional workspace are required

Cover Letter

The cover letter should address: (1) your interest in appellate practice; (2) An example of when your advocacy skills led to a positive or negative outcome, either in the appellate context or in a comparable context, and what you learned from the experience; and (3) based on what you know so far, why you would be a great fit for our team and why we would be a good fit for you.


Resume

We are reviewing your resume to determine: Your skillset and how it would support you in your role as an Appellate Attorney; Outcomes and effectiveness of your work; Your experience working on a team; Your ability to learn and grow personally and professionally.


Writing Sample

Please provide a writing sample, such as an appellate brief or legal memorandum, that is primarily your own work product and is representative of your writing skills. Please include no more than three writing samples in your submission.


List of References

Please provide a list of at least two references who are knowledgeable about your relevant experience and qualifications. Note: if your application is confidential, please include only references whom you trust to maintain that confidentiality.
